## What you'll learn

- Most Madison and Huntsville HOAs approve stained wood privacy, board-on-board, black aluminum, white vinyl, and short front-yard picket fences.
- Hampton Cove bans vinyl and chain link, and every fence there must be painted or stained.
- Neither Huntsville nor Madison issues residential fence permits, so your HOA decides the style.
- Most denials come from one wrong detail, like the finished side facing in or no color on the application.
- Walk your street before you choose, because ARCs approve what they already see.

Most HOAs in Madison and Huntsville approve five fence styles. Those are a stained wood privacy fence with the finished side out, board on board with a top cap, black ornamental aluminum, white vinyl privacy and a short picket or aluminum fence in the front yard. Hampton Cove bans vinyl. Chain link and raw, unstained wood get sent back most.

Picking one of those HOA approved fence styles gets you halfway to a yes. Your architectural review committee (ARC) also checks color, height, which side faces out and where the fence stops beside the house. Miss one and your approved style comes back denied, usually in a letter that uses the word "harmonious" twice.

## HOA Approved Fence Styles in Madison and Huntsville, Ranked

Stained wood privacy and black ornamental aluminum clear architectural review most often across Madison and Huntsville subdivisions. White vinyl passes in many Madison neighborhoods and fails every time in Hampton Cove. Chain link rarely survives HOA review anywhere in North Alabama.

| Fence style | Where it usually passes | Where it gets stuck | What the ARC asks about |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 6-foot wood privacy, dog-ear or flat top | Rear and side yards in most subdivisions | Front yards and unstained boards | Stain or paint color, finished side facing out |
| Board on board or shadowbox with a top cap | Upscale neighborhoods and lots that back onto a street | Rarely denied, budget is the usual objection | Cap and trim profile, color |
| Black ornamental aluminum, flat top | Golf lots, lake lots, front yards and pools | Spear or finial tops where the street uses flat tops | Height, picket spacing, post caps |
| White vinyl privacy | Many newer Madison neighborhoods | Hampton Cove bans it outright | Profile and color match with neighbors |
| Wood or aluminum picket, 3 to 4 feet | Front yards and traditional designs like Village of Providence | Solid front fences that block the view | Height and picket spacing |
| Horizontal slat | Modern builds and newer infill lots | Traditional neighborhoods with older covenants | Board spacing, framing, color |
| Chain link | Almost nowhere inside an HOA | Everywhere, and Hampton Cove bans it by name | Usually a flat no |

ARC members approve what they already see from the sidewalk. Walk your street before you pick anything. If eleven of fourteen backyards show tan board on board, your committee just told you its favorite fence without writing a word.

## Why Hampton Cove Says No to Vinyl When Madison Says Yes

Hampton Cove Owners Association bans vinyl and chain link fencing across the whole community and requires every fence to be painted or stained ([Hampton Cove Owners Association, 2026](https://hamptoncove.com/faqs/)). Madison HOAs write their own lists, and plenty of them approve white vinyl. That split explains how a fence your cousin built in Madison can earn you a violation letter in Hampton Cove.

Hampton Cove sits inside Huntsville city limits, but the city has nothing to say about your fence style there. The master association and its fence request form set these limits ([Hampton Cove Owners Association, 2021](https://hamptoncove.com/forms-and-documents/)):

- Every fence gets paint or stain, and a "natural color" wood fence fails review.
- Any color other than your house trim needs office approval. The preferred fence color is Sherwin-Williams Sand Castle, a warm beige that sounds like a beach trip and looks like a well-behaved subdivision.
- Your fence can't come closer to the front lot line than the rear-most corner of your house, unless the house has a side porch.
- Golf course lots must use black aluminum or wrought iron.
- Lake lots get a 4-foot, three-rail powder coated aluminum fence with ball caps on the corner and gate posts.

Budget time too. The covenants give the ARC up to 45 days to process a request. Your neighborhood's supplemental declaration can stack more rules on top of the master list. The association has also offered refunds of up to $100 to the first 25 residents who paint their fence Sand Castle, which makes it the rare HOA rule that pays you back.

## Does the City or Your HOA Decide Your Fence Style

Your HOA decides the style. Huntsville requires no permit for a residential fence ([City of Huntsville, 2016](https://www.huntsvilleal.gov/faqs-for-residential-construction/)), and Madison stopped issuing fence permits on March 1, 2017 ([City of Madison, 2017](https://www.madisonal.gov/Faq.aspx?QID=307)). Outside a historic district, nobody at city hall reviews whether you picked cedar, vinyl or aluminum.

The cities still control placement. In Madison, no fence or hedge on a corner lot may block vision between 2.5 and 6 feet high inside the triangle that runs 30 feet along each street from the corner of the right-of-way lines. A solid fence along the edge of a Madison front yard can't block visibility above 2.5 feet. Build inside a city easement and Madison can remove your fence to reach it, without replacing it.

Historic districts add a second review. Madison requires Historic Preservation Commission approval inside its historic district, and Huntsville's local historic districts, including Twickenham, run their own preservation review. Alabama has no state law capping the fence rules an HOA can write, so when your HOA and your city disagree, you satisfy both. Our [fence permit guide for North Alabama](https://www.fencinghuntsvilleal.com/blog/fence-permit-guide-north-alabama/) covers the city side street by street.

## Seven Details That Sink an Approved Fence Style

Most denials we see involve a good style with one wrong detail. Check these seven before you hit submit.

1. The finished side faces your yard. Most ARCs want the smooth face toward the neighbor or street, with posts and rails on your side.
2. The application leaves color blank. A committee reads unstained pine as "natural color," and Hampton Cove rejects that by name.
3. The fence runs past the house corner. Many covenants stop side fences at or behind the rear corner of the house.
4. The height stays at 6 feet all the way to the front. Committees expect privacy height in back and a step down to 4 feet or less toward the street.
5. Your aluminum has spear tops on a street full of flat top rails. Match what your neighbors already installed.
6. Your fence meets a neighbor's fence at a different height or color. ARCs want the joint to look like one project.
7. Nobody drew the fence on the plat. Hampton Cove asks for the fence line, gates and brick posts drawn on a plat map from the Madison County Tax Assessor website.

### Does the Good Side of the Fence Have to Face My Neighbor

In most North Alabama HOAs that address it, yes. The finished side faces adjoining lots and the street, and the framing faces you. People call this a good neighbor fence. If you want a finished look from your own patio too, shadowbox and board on board styles look complete from both yards and end the debate before it starts.

### Can I Build a 6 Foot Privacy Fence on a Corner Lot in Madison

Yes, as long as it stays out of the corner triangle. Madison keeps the 30-foot triangle at the intersection clear of anything that blocks sight between 2.5 and 6 feet high. Most corner lot owners run 6-foot privacy behind the house and switch to open black aluminum along the street side. Your HOA may still ask for a lower height on that street-facing run.

## How to Pick a Fence Style Your ARC Signs the First Time

Match what your covenants name and what your street already shows, then document it. Committees approve complete packets faster than they approve good ideas.

1. Pull your neighborhood's supplemental declaration along with the master covenants. Hampton Cove points owners to both, and the neighborhood document often holds the stricter fence rule.
2. Walk your street and count fence styles, heights and colors on lots like yours.
3. Choose the style that shows up most on lots that match yours, whether yours is a golf, lake, corner or interior lot.
4. Get the manufacturer spec sheet plus a color chip or stain sample.
5. Draw the fence, gates and posts on your plat with measurements.
6. Wait for written approval before anyone orders material or calls Alabama 811 to mark the lines.

Our checklist for [what to submit to an architectural review committee](https://www.fencinghuntsvilleal.com/blog/what-to-submit-architectural-review-committee/) walks through that packet line by line. If your ARC leans toward wood, our [wood fence installation in Huntsville](https://www.fencinghuntsvilleal.com/services/wood-fences/) crew builds to your approved color. If it leans toward metal, see our [black ornamental aluminum fences](https://www.fencinghuntsvilleal.com/services/aluminum-fences/).

> **From a recent Hampton Cove job.** A couple called us in April with 18 white vinyl panels stacked in the garage, bought on sale before anyone read the covenants. Their ARC was never going to approve them. We redrew the plan as 196 linear feet of 6-foot board on board with a flat cap, painted Sand Castle, drew it on their plat and attached the spec sheets. The committee signed off in 23 days. The vinyl went to a relative in Toney with no HOA, where it now guards a chicken run with great dignity.

## What Happens If You Build a Style Your HOA Never Approved

Your HOA can fine you and require the fence to come down. The Alabama Homeowners' Association Act covers associations created on or after January 1, 2016, and lets the board assess reasonable penalties after notice and a hearing ([Code of Alabama § 35-20-11, 2016](https://law.onecle.com/alabama/title-35/chapter-20/index.html)). Older HOAs enforce through their own covenants, and many of those allow fines, liens and court action.

The math hurts either way. Tear out 180 feet of new fence and you pay for the fence twice, plus the removal. Appealing a denial or resubmitting with a compliant style costs you a few weeks. Our guide on [building a fence without HOA approval](https://www.fencinghuntsvilleal.com/blog/built-fence-without-hoa-approval/) covers your options if the posts are already in the ground.

## Which Fence Style Fits Your Yard Situation

Your lot type narrows the approved list fast. Use this table as a starting point, then check it against your own covenants.

| Your situation | Style that usually passes | Watch out for |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Dogs in a fenced backyard | 6-foot wood privacy, or vinyl where allowed | Gaps under the bottom rail |
| Backyard pool in Madison | Black aluminum, at least 4 feet tall, self-closing gate | Madison requires a 4-foot fence around residential pools |
| Corner lot | Privacy behind the house, open aluminum along the street | The 30-foot sight triangle |
| Golf course or lake lot | Black aluminum | Any solid fence that blocks the view |
| Front yard definition | 3 to 4-foot picket or aluminum | Solid panels and full privacy height |
| Tight budget | Stained wood privacy | Skipping the stain to save money |

Pool owners should read the barrier rules on our [pool fencing](https://www.fencinghuntsvilleal.com/services/pool-fencing/) page before choosing a style. ## We Handle the HOA Paperwork for You

Most homeowners hate the packet more than the fence. We measure your lot, draw the fence on your plat, pull the spec sheets and color samples and hand you a submission ready for your ARC. If the committee asks for a change, we revise it and resubmit. We do this every week for homeowners across [Madison, AL](https://www.fencinghuntsvilleal.com/locations/madison-al/), Huntsville and Hampton Cove.

Tell us your neighborhood and we'll tell you which styles its ARC has already approved. Call [(256) 877-5278](tel:+12568775278) or request a free on-site estimate below.
